‘Pinoy Pride’ Rally for Jessica Sanchez is an Experiment in Social Networking PDF Print E-mail

Words and photography by Rene Villaroman | PinoyWatchDog.com

When I arrived at the 7700 block of Beverly Blvd., right where the gate to the Fairfax studio of CBS is located, there is a motley group of about fifty people already in line along the sidewalk closest to the studio’s gate. I take that to mean that the ‘Pinoy Pride’ Rally for Jessica Sanchez that its organizers posted on Facebook and twitted on Twitter already had attracted a respectable crowd. But I am wrong. I approach a man, and in my best Los Angeles accent, ask, “Hey, bro, what’s going on here? Are you here for the Jessica Sanchez rally?” He looks at me quizically, his eyebrows raised, and answers, “We are lining up to watch the American Idol show.”

It occurs to me that the FB announcement said the rally would be held at Fairfax at 3rd Street, so I begin a hasty trot towards Fairfax, which is about two short blocks away. Before I can reach the first block, I run into Fil-Am Television owner-general manager Lisa Moody, with one of his producers, Giovi Zamora, in tow. They are carrying a 10 x 3-foot vinyl banner with a large picture of Jessica Sanchez, and the message, Vote for Jessica. In that instant, I realize that the venue of the rally is where I first landed.

After Lisa and Giovi manage to hang the banner from the wire mesh fence surrounding the studio, Margo Howlett and her daughter-in-law, Diana Howlett, a Pinay, saunter and pose for souvenir pictures, and I talk with them. They are avid fans of Jessica and drove from Temple City. “We’re glad to see her since we almost lost her last week,” says Margo. “We’ve been following her since she made the top 12,” says Diana.

Lydia Agultos is from Rancho del Rey, a neighboring development to Chula Vista, in San Diego County where Jessica is from. Lydia took a day off and drove two-and-a-half hours to Los Angeles with two adult sons in order to see Jessica perform in person tonight. She tells PinoyWatchDog.com that their Mayor, Sheryl Cox, did not watch ‘American Idol’ before, but upon learning that Jessica is from Chula Vista, she began watching the show to follow the 16-year-old-singer’s quest for the ‘Idol’ championship. Lydia adds: “She deserves to win; she’s very, very good.”

Lisa Moody tells PinoyWatchDog.com that they planned to gather people together. She calls it “a social media experiment.” Giovi Zamora shared that although the numbers were not there, social media support was “phenomenal.” He says this is evidenced by a flurry of “likes” and other comments supporting the ‘Pinoy Pride’ rally in Facebook.

“Jessica Sanchez is a great rallying point,” explains Moody. “I’d love to see Fil-Am visibility by rallying around Jessica, who is of course symbolic because she is the only person of color now among the seven remaining finalists, and known to be the best; and we know that the judges have been impressed.”

At around 2:15 p.m. Isidric Panganiban, a producer and cinematographer arrived with actor-producer Rambrandt Sabelis, who will be starring in a big mainstream movie that will feature stars and our very own Manny Pacquiao. Rembrandt says that the movie is now in pre-production stage and will begin filming in summer. “No, this is not an indie,” he emphasized. “this is a well-funded movie!” With Isidric and company’s arrival, the number of the group swelled to about ten people.

Isidric siddles up to me and whispers, “Twenty-two people confirmed that they would attend.” Granted. That would only total less than 30 people. Before I leave the venue at 4 p.m., my colleague, Joe Cobilla and his daughter have left. But before I leave for my car, Adrian Lecaros, a candidate for the California Assembly, arrives carrying a few placards. I would say that his sense of reckoning is dead-on because he only brought a half-dozen placards.

But, like what Lisa said at the outset, this is a social media experiment, and does not reflect on the popularity of Jessica Sanchez. Another reason is that of timing. At 2 p.m. most young people are still in school, and the older ones are still toiling away in the saltmines. I am sure that the humble, hard-working and unassuming Jessica would have minded if only about thirty people came to a rally supporting her.

=============

When 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez says she’s been singing her whole life, she means it. At 11, the Filipino-American appeared on America’s Got Talent, where she wowed with her cover of “I Surrender.” Five years later, she’s getting the chance to perform in front of the world again on American Idol Season 11.

Though we didn’t see much of her before Vegas — when she sang “The Prayer” — what we’ve now seen of the San Diego resident makes us wonder where Idol had been hiding her. Jessica wowed the judges — and us — with her take on Jennifer Hudson's "I Love You I Do" in the Semifinals, which earned her a spot in the Top 13. For her Top 13 performances, Jessica took on a big song — Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" — and nailed it, according to the judges.

Once in a Lifetime - Sharon Cuneta & Martin Nievera PDF Print E-mail

Megastar Sharon Cuneta and Concert King Martin Nievera will share the stage for the first time in the music event of this year’s Valentine season. The concert, "Once In A Lifetime," is a co-production between Viva Concerts & Events and Mega Productions, Inc., which will be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on February 11.

Sharon has been one of the country’s foremost singing stars ever since she broke into the big time in 1978 with "Mr. DJ" at the age of 13. The Rey Valera composition became the start of a long list of hit songs that eventually led to her being proclaimed the Megastar. Sharon reigned supreme at the box-office "Maging Sino Ka Man," "Kahit Konting Pagtingin," "Bituing Walang Ningning" and others; on television the long-running "The Sharon Cuneta Show," in concert and recordings and as a celebrity endorser.

The son of balladeer Bert Nievera, Martin’s big break came when he recorded the Vehnee Saturno composition "Be My Lady." Since then, he has also notched one big hit song after another, "Each Day With You," "You Are My Song," "Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin," "Forever," "Ikaw ang Aking Pangarap" and others; starred in the highly-rated TV talk shows "Penthouse Live" and "Martin After Dark;" and became the Concert King with one blockbuster concert after another.

Here, also for the first time, Martin talks about Sharon, the Megastar, friend and colleague:

"One of the many things I admire most about Sharon is her life long dedication to her craft. Never mind that she is probably one of the smartest people I know. Not to mention also thoughtful and talented. Never mind all that.

"What I noticed and have admired most about her from the first time I met her to this very day is how much of her life she puts in her every song, her every movie, her every ‘everything.’ Not too many people know it but Sharon Cuneta didn’t even have time to have a childhood. Not a normal one anyway, with her commitment to her craft and to her fans Sharon has been Mega!

"When I used to watch her from a distance during a rehearsal for a TV special or concert I’ve often wondered what is inside that strong exterior. Is she happy or sad? Is she content or is it pretend? What does she do when she is not Mega for us? I think this is why when Sharon has reached the peak of her patience and ‘showbiz’ understanding, she let’s us have it with a strong opinion or a piece of her real not reel mind.

"Sharon is a pillar of strength and has the emotion you won’t find in anyone in this business. Yet she doesn’t complain nor does she blame. She is and will always be in a class all her own. For me Sharon is more than Mega. She is real. I am proud to be her friend.

"Sharing the stage with someone I admire as much as I admire Sharon will be a once in a lifetime thrill! Unforgettable!"

Both Sharon and Martin are also major concert draws abroad with well-received performances in the US, Canada and Europe. Sharon was in New Zealand a few weeks ago, while Martin performed in Ireland for the first time. Sharon comes to "Once In A Lifetime" after nearly two years away from the local concert stage, while Martin will cap one of his most successful years as a performer with the Valentine show. He top billed "What Love Is" at the Big Dome with Sarah Geronimo in February 2011 and later took the show on the road to major cities around the Philippines. He also did two nights at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila and was at the Araneta with Side A last November.

Among the highlights of the Sharon-Martin concert will be their duet of "Once In A Lifetime," a song expressly composed and produced for the occasion by Saturno with lyrics written by Martin himself. The song also marks Sharon’s return to Viva as a recording artist. Sharon and Martin will also perform many of their hits, "To Love Again," "Say That You Love Me," "Now That You’re Gone" as well as the songs that their fans have been longing to hear them sing together like "The Last Time I Felt Like This," "Ikaw" and "The Promise."

"Once In A Lifetime" is presented by TV5 and Smart with co-presentor McDonald’s and media partners Manila Bulletin; Philippine Star; Business World; 105.1 Crossover; 94.7 Mellow; Radyo 5; and 101.1 Yes-FM. directed by Rowell Santiago with Louie Ocampo as musical director.

Tickets are available at all Ticketnet outlets located at the SM Department Store Customer Service Area and at the Smart Araneta Coliseum ticket booths. Call Viva Concerts 687-7236 or Ticketnet 911-5555 for inquiries.
